Armed man safely taken into custody

On this date at 1331 hours the Chaffee County Communications Center received a call of an armed suicidal person at 7710 W Hwy 50, which is unincorporated Chaffee County.

Officers from both the Chaffee County Sheriff’s Office and the Salida Police Department responded to the scene and encountered a male at the rear of the residence. The male later identified as Ted Alnutt, age 48, from Salida, was threatening to kill himself and was armed with two semi-automatic handguns threatening to shoot himself.

Additional personnel responded to the scene and Highway 50 was closed in both directions and neighbors adjacent to the residence were evacuated.

Negotiators from both the Salida Police Department and the Chaffee County Sheriff’s Office began talking to the male in an attempt to have him disarm himself. Negotiations continued with the male for approximately an hour and 30 minutes. During the negotiations the male entered his residence however negotiators were able to talk the male from inside his home unarmed and he was taken into custody unharmed.

Alnutt was transported to the Heart of the Rockies Regional Medical Center where he was medically cleared. He was then transported to the Chaffee County Detentions Center where he was booked into jail for Prohibited use of a Weapon, a class 2 misdemeanor, and Resisting Arrest, a class 2 misdemeanor.

Also assisting were the Colorado state Patrol, Chaffee County EMS and Salida Fire.
